The Lamar Community College softball team finished regular-season play with splits against Otero Junior College, Trinidad State Junior College and Garden City Community College. The Lopes are ranked No. 1 in Region IX and will host the Region IX Tournament April 27-29 on Citizen's Field.
Wednesday, April 19th
The Runnin' Lopes split with Otero Junior College winning 11-5 and falling 3-2. In the first match up, LCC recorded 12 hits including four doubles (Caitlin McCarthy, Larissa Royer, Alexis Johnson, Lauren Reed), one triple (Nonica Rivera) and two home runs (Lauren Reed, Royer). Reed threw the win for the Lopes, striking out four and allowing four hits. In the second game, LCC's lineup was unable to push runs across, leaving eight runners on base. Freshman Alexis Johnson recorded the only two RBI for the Lopes, going 2-for-3 at the plate.
Saturday, April 14th
In Trinidad, the Lopes fell short in the first game against TSJC despite a comeback in the top of the 7th inning. The Runnin' Lopes scored four runs in the final frame against the Trojans, tying the score 5-5, but were unable to hold off Trinidad's offense as the winning run scored on an error by the LCC defense. Freshman Alexis Johnson went 2-for-3 with a home run, and freshman Raylene Anaya went 3-for-4 with one RBI. In the second match-up, LCC came back and defeated the Trojans 4-2. Freshman Emily Womeldorff received the win in the circle, striking out six and allowing no earned runs. Sophomores Royer and McCarthy each went 2-for-3 at the plate, Royer with a double and McCarthy with a triple.
Thursday, April 19th
In the final regular season match-up against Garden City Community College, the Runnin' Lopes lost the first 8-5 before coming back to beat the Broncbusters 8-0. Freshman Alyvia Woolsey went 3-for-4 in the first with a home run and four RBI. Sophomore Lauren Reed also stroked the ball, going 2-for-3 with two doubles. In the second game, the Lopes responded to the loss with 13 hits, including four doubles (Mackenzie Rowlett, Caitlin McCarthy-2, Reed) and three home runs (Larissa Royer, Mercedes Salazar-2). Freshman Emily Womeldorff threw the win, allowing no earned runs and striking out six.
The Runnin' Lopes enter the tournament 35-16 overall and 24-6 in conference. As the first-place team, they will host the Region IX tournament starting April 27. LCC will play at 11 a.m. against the fourth-seeded team (TBD). There will an admissions charge of $5 for adults and $3 for children and senior citizens. Games will begin on Citizen's Field on Friday, April 27 and can continue into Sunday, April 29.
