Lamar Community College Runnin' Lopes Men's Basketball will look to carry on the momentum that they built during the spring 2015 semester. The Lopes started something no one expected when Coach Fenerci took over in the beginning of the spring 2015 semester and finished with 8-4 overall record.
"After all the hard work they put in, it was tough for our guys to lose in the first round of the playoff; but the returners know that we established something and were able to put our name on the map in a very short time period," said Coach Sercan Fenerci, who is starting his first full year as the program's head coach. "Our sophomores know that we have a chance to work on our skills all pre-season and be a lot more ready this fall than we were in spring 2015."
The Runnin' Lopes have seven returning players from last year's campaign: five sophomores and two redshirt freshman. Sophomores include Chris Lewis, Jiere Morrisey, Lynrick Moxey, Mario Zimaridis, and Jon Dunmyer. Taylor Shepard and Nyang Reat return as redshirt freshman.
Coach Fenerci and his staff worked very diligently during the off-season to bring high-quality recruits into the program. Newcomers include two-time state of Colorado steals leader, freshman Michael Skinner (Thornton, CO); freshman sharp shooter Wayne Stewart (Philadelphia, PA); Polk State (FL) transfer who started more than half the games last season, sophomore Shafeek Taylor (Philadelphia, PA); 7'0" shot blocker Isaiah Martin (Denver, CO); low block presences 6'8" freshman Jerome Laneir (Denver, CO) and 6'9" freshman Minfeke Sanoh (Collingdale, PA); the under 16 & 17 Mexican national team guard, freshman Jose Arenas (Mexico); point guard Francis DePina (Boston, MA); and two athletic freshmen forwards, Kris Robinson (Fountain, CO) and Omar Johnson (Colorado Springs, CO).
Coach Serg Fenerci commented that the team had a good pre-season and completed their scrimmages against tough competition in Dallas, Dodge City, and at Regis University (NCAA Division 2).
"We got to see what we can do against some really good teams from other regions. We found out what we are good at and what we will need to work on during the process," said Coach Fenerci.
The Lopes will open the season on the road against Northwest Kansas Tech JV and Northwest Kansas Tech on October 30-31, and the team will be on the road during the majority of the fall semester. There will be two home games this semester for the Lopes Men's Basketball team: November 17 at 7:00pm vs. Clarendon College (TX) and December 1st at 7:00pm vs. Colorado Christian University JV.
Starting this year, fans 18 years old and under will be able to get into both the men's and women's basketball games for free. "We are looking to have more and more fans in the stands this year to support both men's and women's basketball programs," said Coach Fenerci.
